In late October, Burma’s military government beat up and jailed eleven villagers for gold-panning at the Irrawaddy Myitsone dam site, after warning locals that only the Ministry of Mining’s joint venture would be allowed to excavate for gold in the area.

Just days after Burma’s president announced the suspension of the Irrawaddy Myitsone dam due to the “will of the people,” authorities ordered the eviction of local residents to make way for the expansion of a massive government-led gold mining operation at the dam site.
