On 21 December 2009, China Power Investment Group (CPI) held a grand ground-breaking ceremony for the former stages of the construction of Myitsone hydropower station in Myanmar's Irrawaddy River.

Representatives from China's Ministry of Commerce, Yunnan Provincial Government and CPI, and the chairman of Myanmar Kachin State's Peace and Development Council, the director of Ministry of Electric Power (I) and the director of Telecommunications attended the ceremony.

Myitsone hydropower station is the first project of the seven-cascade dam in the upper reaches of the Myanmar's Irrawaddy River, which are to be invested by CPI. It is co-developed by CPI, Myanmar's Ministry of Electric Power (I) and Myanmar's Asia World Company. Its installed capacity is 6,000 MW, which will be the biggest power station in Myanmar. The first turbine is expected to operate in 2017.

The ceremony marks the beginning of the development of the Irrawaddy River basin by CPI, after the signing of agreement between CPI and Myanmar's Ministry of Electric Power (I) in 20 December.
